What’s your next step?

A wise woman once told me:

“In moments of fear or confusion, take the next best step. It’s as simple as that. Take the next best step. Don’t worry about where you’ll be in 5-10 years… just handle today. There is freedom in abandoning the ‘what if’s’ and life plans created in our minds. Let God be good… He’ll open and close doors!”

I never forgot Bianca‘s advice. It was simple, but it was powerful. Now, every time I feel lost, I ask myself: “What’s the next step I need to take?”

Sometimes, I arrive at some pretty convicting answers. But most of the time, the answers are kind of funny.

Start writing your paper.

Go to sleep.

Finish reading that chapter.

Send that letter.

I find it funny because most of the time, I expect large and grand steps. I want God to give me revealing answers to my big questions. I want answers that will make my future clearer for me, and I want them NOW. But that’s not how God works.

Sometimes, He keeps things simple. Sometimes, the steps He asks us to take seem so trivial to us that we don’t see the purpose in doing what we need do.

But He sees what we don’t see. He sees that we’re too busy worrying about the future that we can’t stay focused on the present. He sees that we’re too busy trying to figure out what to do five years from now that we’re slacking off on what needs to be done five minutes from now. He sees that we spend too much energy stressing out, when what we really need to do is to rest in His love.

Above all, He sees the bigger picture, and I’m grateful that He guides us through the seemingly little steps so that we don’t miss the crucial parts of the journey.

Can you relate to this? Do you have a “next step” waiting for you?

hehe, this reminds me of the story of Moses and the Israelites when they escaped Egypt. when they found out that Pharaoh was in pursuit and saw them approaching, they were in a panic and cried out to God, wanting Him to give them big bold instructions, or at least answers as to why they were there… and His reply was simply, “Tell the Israelites to move on.” (Exodus 14:15) and after that were the instructions to Moses to split the sea. :)

great blog, good reminder that sometimes God just wants us to “move on” and wait for Him to take action, and not just stay put in one place panicking ^_^
